A dog-friendly country cottage for four in a converted single-kiln oast house, standing in the old yard of a fifteen-acre High Weald estate at Frant, East Sussex, near Tunbridge Wells.
The house
The Oast was built to dry hops and has been persuaded, without much argument, to hold a family instead. The kiln gives the house its shape: curved walls, deep sills, a stubborn refusal to offer a straight run of wall for a picture. Above it the cowl still turns with the wind, which is the only part of the building that has never changed job.
It sleeps four, with two bedrooms, and is comfortable in the way a working building becomes comfortable — warm, solid, and unbothered by boots. The estate begins at the door: fifteen acres of orchard, meadow, old trees and long views over the Weald.
Calendar prices are for accommodation only. A £30 cleaning fee is added separately and shown in the Lodgify checkout total.

Beyond the door
Guests have the run of the fifteen acres. The Oast has its own private, fully enclosed garden, and beyond the garden gate the orchard, the meadow, the old hedgerows and the tree lines are yours to walk and explore for as long as you are here.
The wider land is countryside rather than a fenced exercise field: deer and other wildlife are often about, and the estate is neither dog-secure nor stock-proof. Dogs are welcome everywhere on it, on a lead once they are past the Oast garden.
Inside
Two bedrooms sleeping four in all. Beds are made up before you arrive with proper linen; the round kiln rooms mean no two corners of the house are quite alike. There is no cot and no high chair at the property, so please bring your own if you need them.
An AGA sits at the heart of the kitchen, with a small butler's fridge alongside it for the day's provisions. The sitting space carries the curve of the kiln, and the table is the size the house was always going to insist on.
A practical boot room and laundry facilities handle muddy boots, coats and the practicalities: a double sink, a bench, hooks and storage, a towel rail and an electric drying rack, with a washing machine and tumble dryer, and the American-style fridge with its ice machine. Country holidays generate laundry; the place was fitted out by people who had already learned that.

One well-behaved dog is included with every stay, and a second may be considered by prior agreement — ask before you book rather than after. The Oast has a private, fully enclosed garden. A dog welcome — bed, bowls and towels — can be requested with a booking, and a practical boot room and laundry facilities deal with the aftermath. Winston, our golden retriever, has been on the estate since 2021 and considers greeting arrivals part of his duties.
Families fit well here: four beds, a meadow to run in and a deer path through the long grass that children find without being told. We do not keep a cot or a high chair, so bring your own if the ages call for them.

The setting
Martins Farm has stood on the ridge above Frant since 1830. The farmhouse, the old barn, the cow byre and the oast are gathered around the yard; beyond them lie the orchard, the meadow and the deer park. Guests stay in The Oast and the rest of the estate is part of the stay.
Frant village and The George are a short walk. Tunbridge Wells, with the Pantiles and the station, is a short drive; Frant station is on the Charing Cross line. Bewl Water, Scotney Castle and Bateman's are all within an easy morning.
