Christmas has a way of turning into logistics. Who is driving, who is cooking, who is sleeping on the sofa, and whether anyone remembered the batteries.
The Oast is a small answer to that. It sleeps four, in two bedrooms upstairs, and it is self-catering, which means the menu, the timings and the second helping are entirely your business.
What follows is not a festive programme. It is a rough shape for a few days that asks very little of anyone.
The kitchen does the work
At the centre of The Oast is the AGA. It is always on, it is always warm, and within about an hour of arrival it becomes the place where everyone stands, whether or not anything is cooking.
It suits the way a quiet Christmas tends to go: a long breakfast, a slow lunch, something in the oven for the evening while the rest of the house reads, sleeps or loses at cards. If you have never cooked on an AGA, it is more forgiving than its reputation. The main rule is to keep the lids down, and the second is to accept that the kitchen will be the warmest room in the house.
A cold walk
The estate is fifteen acres of High Weald meadow, hedge and tree line, and a walk round it before lunch is a reasonable use of anyone’s morning. Wear boots. December in the Weald is soft underfoot, and the mud has no respect for the season. Muddy boots and wet coats go to the boot room and utility, which sit in a separate outbuilding a few steps from the house, so the mud stays out.
One outing, chosen well
One festive outing is plenty. Two, if the second is a pub. Two good options, both checked against the organisers’ own pages this September:
Bedgebury National Pinetum runs its Christmas light trail on selected evenings from 20 November to 31 December 2026. Tickets are timed and must be booked in advance, and parking is booked and charged separately. Dogs are allowed on a short lead. Check the exact evenings with Forestry England before you set your heart on one.
Hever Castle holds its Christmas event on selected dates from 20 November 2026 to 2 January 2027, closed on 25 and 26 December. Tickets for the general public go on sale on 30 September 2026. Dogs are welcome in the grounds on a lead, but not in the castle, the grotto or other indoor areas, so plan for someone to take a turn outside.

Meals in, mostly
Self-catering at Christmas is less work than it sounds when the kitchen is this comfortable. Bring the ingredients for the big meal, keep the rest simple, and let whoever enjoys cooking have the AGA to themselves for an afternoon.
If you would like the first morning taken care of, the farm breakfast hamper can be requested when you book. So can a bottle of Sussex sparkling wine, chilled for arrival. Both are optional extras on request rather than included, and we will confirm them with you before your stay. The dog is invited
One dog is welcome at The Oast as part of the stay, and a second by prior agreement. Dogs stay downstairs. Winston will regard your dog’s arrival as a personal matter and will want to discuss it at the gate.
A spare day
The most useful day of a Christmas break is the one with nothing in it. If the calendar allows, add a night: it turns a rushed visit into a proper rest, and it is usually the day people remember. Whether an extra night is possible depends on live availability and the booking terms on the calendar.
